Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' THE YEARLING will grab readers by bringing them into the world of Jody Baxter & his family, living a hardscrabble life in the wilderness of Florida.
Jody's experiences growing up in a secluded, rural environment among people who work extraordinarily hard to eke out an existence in a time of no telephones, no TV, no electricity, no Internet, & no electronic devices is a universal story with which
teens will strongly identify.
The dialect of the characters takes a little getting used to at the beginning but is so worth sticking with. Although this is a somewhat long book (400 pages), it will lure you into Jody's life long before that and you'll find it a very fulfilling, poignant read.
This book is more appropriate for older teens (ages 15 and up). 428 pages 978-0020449317
