James and the Giant Peach

Young James was leading a very unfortunate and depressed life at his Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker's estate. That is until a mysterious stranger gave him some magic seeds to make everything better, but when James trips and drops them, he'll get more than he could have ever imagined.

The dormant fruit tree amazingly grows a peach that then swells to the size of a large house. And once James finds a secret entranceway, he'll meet the most unusual of friends--a giant Grasshopper, a surly Centipede, a kind-hearted Ladybug, and even a Spider that everyone adores. Together they will go on a most unlikely epic adventure.

Are you are looking for a fast read? If you are this is a good book for you . It has 140 pages. In this story a young boy is left with his aunts after his parents are killed. His aunts treat him badly and make him work ALL day long. One day when James was working a man gave him a bag of weird green things. Then James drops the bag and the things come out and get away. Then a huge peach on the peach tree (that grows no peaches) starts to grow. His aunts get exited and over night got a lot of money. James finds out that inside the huge peach bugs were waiting for him. Then they go on a great big journey to the big apple. Will they get there or get stuck on the way? Read the book to find out.

This is another favorite of ours. The aunts in the story are very scary people, but at least he doesn't have to be with them very long. High seas adventure with wise insects. The young hero is a boy - great for boy readers when so much of the literature for that age has girl protagonists.
