This is another favorite of ours. The aunts in the story are very scary people, but at least he doesn't have to be with them very long. High seas adventure with wise insects. The young hero is a boy - great for boy readers when so much of the literature for that age has girl protagonists.

His aunts treat him badly and make him work ALL day long. One day when James was working a man gave him a bag of weird green things. Then James drops the bag and the things come out and get away. Then a huge peach on the peach tree (that grows no peaches) starts to grow. His aunts get exited and over night got a lot of money. James finds out that inside the huge peach bugs were waiting for him. Then they go on a great big journey to the big apple. Will they get there or get stuck on the way? Read the book to find out.
