Twelve-year-old Skye McPhee is about to have her world turned upside-down. Her older brother, Scott, who almost totaled the family car four months previously, has been in rehabilitation as a result of a brain injury. When Scott comes home, he is wheelchair-bound and filled with frustration and depression. Skye’s parents decide it’s in everyone’s best interest to send Skye away to live in New Mexico with her Gran. This means Skye must separate from her best friend, Hana. It also means trying to find herself in a new school. One thing Skye can count on is her ability to draw. She joins the school newspaper and uses her talents to stand up against the jocks and bullies who are picking on those they see as “different.”
