Anya’s just dying to have a best friend. She’s done everything she can to fit in and have friends; dropping her Russian accent, dressing like the other girls at school, but nothing seems to win her any friends. Anya tumbles down a well and lands on a pile of bones; Anya gets a spirited friend, and more than she’s bargained for. Her new best friend helps her to be rescued and proves to be handy back at school whether spying for correct answers on tests or in finding ways to finally being noticed by a popular boy. But be careful what you wish for. When Anya’s ghost proves to be pursuing her own haunted agenda, and Anya’s got her hands full just to arrive safely back to her own humdrum life.
With sharp, grayscale drawings and an unruly authenticity, Anya’s Ghost is a great graphic novel for middle school readers.
