This is based on the true story of the Muldie family. In 1878, Ed Muldie and his wife and boys left Kentucky and moved west to Kansas to get some free land. Mama dies along the way, but when the Muldie's arrive, they dig themselves a dugout in the prairie dirt and become part of the town of Nicodemus. Facing a harsh winter, food scarcity and the arrival of Indians, Mr. Muldie leaves the boys, the oldest aged 11, and searches for a new piece of land. The boys live on their own and wait, hunting, fishing and taking care of each other. Ages 5-8 64 pages
