The Story of Cirrus Flux
"And then he senses something." And he remembers the words of Mr. Whipstaff, "Invisible forces be at work in this world, boys." "He looks up to see a scintillating stream of particles rippling overhead, passing back and forth across the sky." What is this powerful force and is it true that Cirrus Flux carries it with him in his sphere? Now he's on the run from the members of the Guild who are after the Breath of God. What was life like for an orphan boy in England in 1756, 1771 or 1783? Left behind by his seaman father, Cirrus Flux is growing up in a home for foundlings. His family consists of the other orphan boys and the adults who run the institution. But, one by one the boys are being apprenticed to odd characters and some strange events are starting to occur. One night Cirrus is awakened by a girl who tells him to get up and hide himself. She has come back to the home to protect him from Madame Orrery, a mesmerist, who is in league with the Guild. The members of the Guild are after The Breath of God. Cirrus' father had sailed to the ends of the Earth to bring it back to them but failed. Perhaps it is in the sphere that hangs around Cirrus' neck-his token left behind by his father on the day he brought his baby to the foundling home. The story is told from the points of view of the different characters and it begins in 1756 with Cirrus' father and then jumps to 1783 and then back to 1771. That creates some great energy watching the pieces of the puzzle come together from the different time periods. This is a great book for kids who are interested in scientific magic. 288 pages
