The Josefina Story Quilt

The Josefina Story Quilt

It's the spring of 1850 and Faith and her family are about to set out for California in a covered wagon. Everyone in the family has to leave precious things behind because there just isn't room in the wagon for everything they want to bring. But Faith is determined not to leave her hen, Josefina, behind. She begs and begs and finally her parents give in. Josefina goes into a cage so she won't get into trouble. Of course, the first night Faith lets Josefina out of her cage and the hen causes a real ruckus among all the horses and cattle. A few days later as the wagon is trying to cross a river, Josefina falls out and floats away. Faith's brother, Adam, jumps in to get Josefina and with the pull of the river it takes three men to get them all back safely. As the wagons roll along, Faith's job is to make patches for a quilt. The patches will help to remember all of the adventures they experience along the way. It's like a "scrapbook" of their westward journey. As each day passes, Josefina keeps finding trouble but then the day arrives when this hen has a chance to save them all from some men with a plan to rob the caravan. For the tenderhearted it's important to know that Josefina will pass on in the course of the story to the great beyond but her memory will stay in the quilt patches Faith has so carefully sewn. 64 pages Ages 5-8
