The Grimm Legacy

Thoughtless, selfish stepsisters ring a bell? That's the lot of Elizabeth in her new life since her mother passed away and she's trying to find her place. As we meet her on the city streets, Elizabeth is choosing to give her sneakers to a homeless woman who is struggling in the bitter cold. Anyone think that woman might not be so ordinary? Magic abounds as Elizabeth is recommended to a Repository for an afterschool job by one of her teachers. In this job she takes call slips out of pneumatic tubes and using the call number for the requested item, searches the floors and shelves for just the right thing. Sounds a bit like a library but instead of books, she might be handing out a pair of Seven League Boots or a cloak of invisibility but that only happens after you've passed the test and gotten your own "key" to the Grimm Collection. Students and lovers of fairy tales will be highly entertained by the glimpses of Grimms' fairy tales that flit through the story. Girls looking for a hint of romance will enjoy the connection between star basketball player Marc Merritt and Anjali who also work at the Respository. Fans of mystery will wonder about Aaron. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? And through it all, the mystery of who is stealing the magical items will bemuse. This is not an action adventure book so much as an puzzle. More cerebral than energetic. Fans of Chasing Vermeer or the Westing Game may have some fun here. Ages 9-12 328 pages
