This book begins with a detailed description of an ochre sea star moving on to land to obtain food. Various sea animals run away, hide from or try to eat this starfish.  His tough defense of self is rewarded with an opportunity to fight with a mussel as a food source, but he successfully eats the poor mussel. When he attempts to return to the ocean, the sea star is attacked by a seagull and loses a ray in the fight. The sea star's life is saved and the lost ray will eventually regrow.  The book concludes with additional information about the amazing sea stars such as its spiny family, its tube feet and traveling stomach, the problem of the lost ray and its swimming babies.
