Spinster Goose: Twisted Rhymes for Naughty Children

Mother Goose’s sister, Spinster Goose has a school specially designed for naughty children. Among other reform school students Little Miss Muffet eats chalk, Georgie Porgie is the class bully, and Lucy Locket loses more than just her pocket. And everyone knows an “Interrupter” like Mary, Mary. Wickedly funny rhymes make this collection of parodies one to pair with traditional nursery rhymes appropriate for children with a sophisticated sense of humor. 48 pages Ages 4-8

What to do with those naughty children even patient and kindly Mother Goose can’t handle? Ship them off to Spinster Goose, her less-than-cuddly sister, for a dollop of discipline! The very appearance of Spinster as the stereotypically stern, unmarried schoolmarm should be enough to scare any child, especially those from familiar nursery rhymes, into better behavior. The charming verses contain some tricky vocabulary, such as “uncouth” and “abhor”, reminiscent of traditional nursery rhymes, but most readers will have no trouble determining the intent of the poems. Tongue-in-cheek illustrations, such as small children clothed in jailhouse stripes and staff members with menacing animals heads, add to the deliciously threatening story line. A collection of delightful cautionary tales that kids, and frazzled adults, will love.
