Shrinking Violet

An inspiring modern fairy tale about a brave girl who shrinks and grows depending on how she feels, showing how all of us―no matter our size―are so much bigger than our fears. From Theodor Seuss Geisel Award-winning author Laurel Snyder and Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator LeUyen Pham.

Violet knows what it’s like to be afraid: when you’re afraid, you feel helpless and small. But when Violet is afraid, she doesn’t just feel small―she actually shrinks! It’s tough to stop feeling frightened when you’re only a few centimeters tall. But when Violet’s best friend is in danger, she’ll have to learn to deal with her fear in a new way―and save the day in the process.

Shrinking Violet is a beautifully illustrated story about fear and bravery for anyone who has ever felt scared and small. Readers will root for Violet as she finds her voice, stands up for her friend, and, most importantly, discovers the tremendous power of her own inner strength.

BIG FEELINGS: Feeling small and afraid is a universally relatable experience. The shrinking metaphor at the core of Violet’s story will resonate deeply with young readers and demonstrate that being (or feeling!) small isn’t a weakness―it’s normal and completely okay.

EMPOWERING HEROINE: Violet is a strong female character who solves her own problems by learning to control and ultimately accept her feelings. Her story will feel familiar and wonderfully relatable to kids, and Violet is a positive role model in whom all young readers (especially girls!) can see themselves represented.

Violet lives in a castle.  Yes, a castle.  She takes good care of it everyday, tends to her garden, and watches out the window for her very good friend, Bird, who fears not.  Bird roams "the distance, up and above, ---wings in the wind, a song that filled the sky."  That's the way life opens and closes for Violet and Bird each day. They are good friends who choose to live very differently from each other.
But on some days, Violet does not feel content. She does not feel safe in her castle. She hears a rustle or sees a spider. Sometimes life can just be too big, too hard, too scary for Violet and when that happens, she shrinks.  Yep, she gets really, really, really small.
Now, we all know that small feeling, right?  But, how do you stop it from showing up?
You know, sometimes life decides to show us a better way.  That's exactly what happens to Violet.  One day she hears her good friend, Bird, calling... "Chirrup?"  That's when she has a feeling that is bigger than being afraid. She has a feeling that she needs to go help her friend, Bird.  She's tiny but she goes looking for him anyway.
Anybody know that small feeling?  That feeling that all you want to do is hide?  Probably not your favorite feeling. Not Violet's favorite feeling either and she makes a choice.  She chooses to care about Bird and to be his very good friend - a bigger friend than maybe Violet has ever been before.
This is a remarkable book about fears, anxiety, and feeling small and helpless. It's also a book about seeing another side of your self... the side that grow s big and strong and knows exactly how to help a good friend.  We all have both.  Violet is giving us a gift... the gift of the strong part of ourselves.
No need to shrink. Violet is a friend to all.
