Sleepy the Goodnight Buddy
Bedtime!  For some families this can be one of the most challenging events of the day.  With the parents exhausted and the child not wanting to cede the waking hours, a small battle can arise.  You know the usual suspects.  The glass of water, the story, the blankie, the hippopotamus, the fried rice, the explanation of quantum physics... it goes on and on until the parents are at their last nerve.
Luckily, Drew Daywalt has clearly observed this phenomenon and has done deep research into the issue.  Triumphantly he presents his brilliant solution here in this timely how-to manual for parents of young children.
Meet Roderick. He is a savvy sleep evader. Night after night he presents his parents with a well-crafted list of pre-bedtime demands.  Being modern and nurturing parents, they do not send him to the outhouse until he can behave. Nope instead they purchase a cuddly stuffed animal, no doubt adding to the 57,654 stuffed animals already dotting the landscape of his bedroom.  But this little bit of snuggle is designed to soothe and reassure the young Roderick and inevitably to help him relax, let go and descend into the land of nod without a struggle, a battle, or his parents resorting to a double shot of something from that hard-to-reach cupboard in the kitchen.
Turns out the stuffy has an agenda all his own.  What begins as a cute query to Roderick, descends into Dante's levels of hell.  Now the pillow is on the other side of the bed.  Now it's Roderick who is having to fend off the nocturnal demands of Sleepy, the stuffed animal.  Sleepy is a true professional.  He knows his bedtime delaying tactics and wields them with great finesse.
Hilarious, satisfying, and a true how-to manual for all parents who desperately are seeking a solution to the bedtime battle.  This would make a great read aloud for any time ..... maybe except bedtime.

It is impossible not to crack up while reading this all-dialogue bedtime story by Drew Daywalt, the New York Times #1 best-selling author of THE DAY THE CRAYONS QUIT. Scott Campbell's expressive illustrations bring home the hilarity.
Roderick hates going to bed, and the young boy has become quite resourceful in coming up with ways to delay the dreaded hour when the lights must go out. Roderick's loving parents--fed up with the distractions and demands that have become his anti-bedtime ritual--decide to get him a stuffed animal to cuddle with and help him wind down. However, Sleepy quickly proves to be a bit high-maintenance. Just when we fear the night may never end, Sleepy's antics become too exhausting for Roderick to bear.--from the publisher
