boys, action/adventure, apprenticeship, coming of age, middle reader, Seeker/Leader, fiction by John Flanagan
In the cold region of Skandia, Evanlyn and Will have escaped slavery and are on their way to returning home. But, when Evanlyn is kidnapped, things take a different turn. As Will tracks his friend, Halt and Horace discover strange tracks in the forest and follow them only to discover the vicious warrior clan the Temujai are planning an invasion of Skandia. Even though Will is finally reunited with his master, their plans of escaping to Araluen are put on hold. The four Araluens must now form an unsteady alliance with the war-like Skandians if both of their nations are to survive. Things don't look good. The Temujai forces outnumber the Skandians almost 20 to one. Not to mention the sea-faring berserkers are not used to planning a war, instead choosing to face an enemy head on, while the Temujai are ruthless in pursuit of victory. It will take all of Halt's skills in strategy to bring about anything other than a massacre, else he and his young charges are doomed. With the help of Erak, the Temujai are in for a surprise and our heroes just may win the day. A tale of finding yourself during war and the strains of friendship across class and social lines, this next chapter in the Apprentice tales shows our heroes growing ever more into themselves and their roles.
