This book didn't grab my attention quite as quickly as the first one in the series because there was some background info from the first book, plus a longer setup before the adventure begins. But once the ball got rolling, it was a good read. The four quirky heroes are reunited for another exciting adventure, and true to the title, this one is definitely more perilous than the first. Some moments near the end of the book can get a little scary, as the heroes are in more serious danger than before. One of the characters (an adult, not one of the kids) gets seriously hurt in many ways, and the bad guys are scarier (and meaner, with weird kinds of torture weapons) than in the first book, so beware.

You really need to read the first book in the series, as this second book builds on that one. See my review on this website for The Mysterious Benedict Society if you haven't read it yet.
