This book is a glowing celebration of and tribute to mothers everywhere. While many children think their mothers are more fun, prettier, or smarter than anyone else, Tomie was certain his mother was extra smart, because of all the things she knew to do for him. She always knew just what to feed him on a cold day, and how to create the perfect Halloween costume. She could bake the best cookies, turn the house into a magical place for Christmas, and drive an old pick-up truck. She could grow mint for ice tea, produce popsicles in the freezer, even teach him how to dance the polka!
This picture book, though charming, serves more as a tribute from Tomie DePaola to his mother than as a book to entice children for independent reading. It’s appeal is sentimental and nostalgic, the artwork simple and evocative of the crayon drawings of children. While its appeal to independant readers may be marginal, it will serve as a wonderful book for curling up and reading aloud with a young child. 32 pages
