Mercy Watson to the Rescue

Mr. and Mrs. Watson have a pig named Mercy. They love her dearly and every night they tuck her into bed and sing her to sleep. On this night the door to Mercy's room has closed and it is dark all around her. Mercy is not happy and she gets out of her bed and goes in to sleep with Mr. and Mrs. Watson. They are all tucked nicely under the covers dreaming good dreams when suddenly there is a loud noise. The floor under the bed is cracking and the bed is starting to fall. Mercy wakes up thinking about toast and decides to go look for some leaving the Watsons hanging on to their bed for dear life. Mercy's search takes her to the neighbors house where they mistake her for a monster and call the fire department for assistance. The charm of this book lies in the utter bliss that Mercy experiences in just about everything-especially the things that have to do with stacks of buttered toast. The neighbors squabble and chase while the Watsons are holding on to the bed with everything they've got and quite happily all the loose ends are tied up neatly and then buttered and served up to a very heroic porcine wonder.

**********

The first adventure of this New York Times best-selling porcine wonder is available in paperback. To Mr. and Mrs. Watson, Mercy is not just a pig — she's a porcine wonder. And to the portly and good-natured Mercy, the Watsons are an excellent source of buttered toast, not to mention that buttery-toasty feeling she gets when she snuggles into bed with them. This is not, however, so good for the Watsons' bed. BOOM! CRACK! As the bed and its occupants slowly sink through the floor, Mercy escapes in a flash – "to alert the fire department," her owners assure themselves. But could Mercy possibly have another emergency in mind — like a sudden craving for their neighbors' sugar cookies? Welcome to the wry and endearing world of Mercy Watson — an ebullient character for early chapter-book readers in a series that's destined to be a classic.---from the publisher
