Mem and her family are heading West. They are leaving the extended family and their cozy home behind. Pa has decided that there is better farming in the Geneesee country in upstate New York. Mem is not excited about the move. Before they even get to the new homestead, Mem has been left behind and gets lost in the woods. When they do arrive at the new homestead, there is more danger from bears. It seems like the biggest danger may come from the trees themselves though.

Pretty good book. Mem does seem to have more brushes with death than you would believe possible though. This is a good book to read as a companion to the Little House series. Not everyone was as happy to set out on a big move as Laura Ingalls. I think this book will hold a elementary readers's attention. Plenty of action on the right level for the elementary crowd. It will go great with studies on the Westward Expansion. The author's notes mention that this is the first in a trilogy about a time period known as the "year without a summer."
