Ten-year-old Birdie is an apprentice to Alfred the Bogler. In exchange for food & shelter she helps Alfred lure monsters (bogles) out of their hiding spots in sewer pipes or fire grates.

She uses her angelic voice to sing morbid verse from popular ballads which in time lure the monsters out so Alfred can stab them with his special lance.

Work has been going well until one day the wealthy folklorist Miss Eames enters the picture. She is determined to find a more scientific way to lure the monsters out. When she sees how Birdie is used for bait Miss Eames pleads with Alfred to let Birdie live with her. Birdie nor Alfred want that to happen but as things start to fall apart and Birdie is kidnapped by the evil Dr. Morton, Alfred finds himself wondering if this line of work is really the best thing after all.

Even though this is book #1 in a series the story is wrapped up nicely but at the same time leaves you wondering what will happen next.
