Dewey's father is doing work for the war effort in Chicago when he sends for her to join him. When she gets on the train, however, she learns that she is headed to New Mexico, not Chicago, and that her father will be waiting for her there. Once in New Mexico, Dewey tries to adjust to a life with secrets and a lot of scientists in a small, guarded world. What's going on here? What is her father really doing here? How safe is this place? America is in the middle of World War II, and somehow it feels as though the war is reaching Dewey's world as well. 352 pages Ages 9-13 (sequel is White Sands, Red Menace)
