Fat Boy Chronicles

Fat Boy Chronicles

"Middle school stunk big time. I mean stink up the toilet kind of stunk....you know, where you're picked on everyday because you're the fat kid." You're reading an entry in JImmy's journal. He has just turned 15 and he and his friend, Paul, don't have a lot of friends. Right now they're trying to play detective because a seventeen year old girl's body was found behind Paul's house. But, food is the big problem. Food is such a part of his family life and it's hard to change habits when everyone else is having another helping. On the other hand, it's no fun going to a party and having the girl you have feelings for pull up her t-shirt, drunk, to see whose breasts are larger, hers or yours-and you're a guy. It's no fun having people call you a four-eyed butt lard or poke you in the stomach. Bullies see you coming and have a field day. This book was written by two teachers who combined their experiences with overweight students in their classrooms and decided to talk about it. The voice of Jimmy resonates beautifully. He's a kid. He's fat. He's not happy. But he's not a quitter either and the best part of the whole story is watching him take control of his eating and his life. He breaks those family habits and stops making food his source of comfort and happiness. Well done! 224 pages Ages 13 and up
