From Hervé Tullet, author of the New York Times bestseller Press Here, a picture book to unleash children’s creativity: Using only a finger and a great deal of imagination, Hervé empowers readers to create a simple flower . . . an entire garden . . . and even whole new worlds!

Once again, Hervé Tullet brilliantly and successfully coaxes children to recognize and celebrate their innate artistic talent. He convinces each reader that their hand is magic and capable of transforming a few simple lines, squiggles, dots, and shapes into . . . well, pretty much anything they can imagine!

A new Hervé picture book is always a cause for celebration. This is his first in seven years and a companion to Press HereMix It Up!, and Let’s Play! with all the hallmark whimsy and imagination that will delight his many fans. Whether enjoyed in a family living room, a kindergarten reading nook, or a preschool art class, there’s something here to enchant every reader.

AN INVITATION TO PLAY, EXPLORE, AND LEARN: Hervé is a master at involving his readers visually, intellectually, and physically in his books by inviting them to touch the pages and perform a series of fun activities, all to yield surprising and delightful results.

SCREEN-FREE INTERACTIVITY: Without technology, electronic bells and whistles, or moving parts, Hervé’s books brilliantly harness the imagination to let readers experience the world through new eyes.

BUILDS DEXTERITY: For very young children, here’s an innovative approach to building dexterity and a brilliant way to learn about following directions using simple hand movements and gestures.

CREATIVE VALUE: Combining rhythm, motion, and shapes with Hervé’s signature bold primary colors and even a bonus gatefold, here's a great tool for arts education that will appeal to parents and educators looking to build children's creative thinking and curiosity skills.---from the publisher

*********

See Hervé Tullet's name on a book cover and you know you are going to be delving into the wonderful world of the preschooler, as he invites them to play along with him.

As with  Tap! Tap! Tap!, Let' Play  and all the others he has shared, (search this blog for 'Tullet') this one encourages the young reader to follow his instructions and move as they read.  But unlike the others, this one is not about making music but making art.  In Mix It Up, he got the reader to play with colour, but in this one it is about using  dots, lines and scribbles.  Step by step, he opens up a whole world of drawing by making all the marks that are the preschooler's cursor to writing and drawing. Is it a flower? A bird? A rocket? A car? Anything is possible! All you need is a magic hand, some colours on a palette, and off you go!

Based on his belief that, " Children need to play. It's their job. It's a fact. My job is to make kids play.' once again our youngest readers not only find joy in the movement, but wonder if the print format, setting them up for a positive expectation in the future.  And the astute adult could easily translate the book from finger-play to real picture-making, and then go further by having the child interpret the dots, lines and scribbles into movement.  Perhaps a dot could be a stomp, a line could be tippy-toes, a scribble ???  Then, one step further, who might move like that ?  Can you imitate their movement?

My grandies adored getting these books when they were little, and the delight hasn't dulled - they were among a small selection of favourites they have asked me to keep for when they are "really grown up" and I am not surprised.
