A friend recently put a call out among her Facebook friends for any now-unwanted copies of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series because her young grandson has just discovered them, loves them and his reading skills are going ahead in leaps and bounds because of his hunger for them. Within minutes she was swamped with offers, including my copy of this latest one, not just because we want to support her grandson's reading but as a testament to their popularity over the years as so many other newly independent readers have used them as stepping stones to more sophisticated, complex stories. Much like Goosebumps 30 years ago and the Treehouse collection 15, this is a series that has the elusive, intangible factor that makes it a must-read among that emerging-reader cohort, particularly boys, leading them on to the joys of stories in print, consolidating both their reading skills and their belief that they can read and capturing a section of the student population that might otherwise have been lost to reading altogether.
Written in the first person that echoes the voice and thoughts of so many boys like Greg, full of humour and heavily illustrated with cartoon-like figures, the series has proven to appeal to reluctant readers as not only is it an easy read, but its popularity puts the reader in the in crowd, important to those who might feel marginalised because they’re struggling academically.
In this new addition, the 20th since the series' inception in 2007, it's Greg's birthday and because his parents have forgot on the actual day, he is planning the ultimate party for himself. He's taken over the planning for the retrospective do because past parties have not always met with his expectations and that there are not too many more birthdays before he starts getting gifts like dress shirts and node-hair trimmers. But when the guest list grows, the decorations flop, and the surprises backfire, this birthday bash turns into a total blowout—just not the kind Greg had in mind. But then, there comes a twist...
This is going to appeal to the already-fans as well as those who are just discovering the series, as they put themselves in Greg's shoes, and one young person in particular, is going to have his holiday reading sorted!
