Darby

It's 1926 in South Carolina, and nine-year old Darby Carmichael lives happily out in the country, spending time with her friend Evette. They are careful how they spend time together, though, because Darby is white, and Evette is black, and they aren't allowed to go into each other's home. One day Evette declares that she wants to grow up to work at a newspaper. This inspires Darby to want to write an article for the local paper. When she writes her article, Evette edits it for her, so there are no spelling mistakes, and the newspaper publishes the article. Great joy except for one thing: Only Darby's name appears on the article and that upsets her. She asks the editor to publish the next article with the name of Evette and the name of Darby attached. The editor is now faced with a great challenge. His decision may put his family and his newspaper in danger because of the tremendous hatred and prejudice in the community. 254 pages Ages 9-12
