Johnny, practice, tap, tap, tap. Every signal has a rap. Some for fighting, One, “Wake up!” One beat tells me, “Time to sup.”
As the southern states begin seceding from the Union, young Johnny, who lives on a plantation, enlists as a drummer boy for the Confederacy. In rhyme, the author describes the duties of a drummer boy and what the Civil War was like. The rhythm of the text matches the rhythm of the drum. This would be a great read-aloud to introduce the time period.
