Mirasol is just a beekeeper when the Master and the Chalice are killed and the "finding rods" choose her as the new Chalice. The new Master has been deep in training as a fire priest. Now the two have been chosen by powerful forces to take over the leadership of the Circle to guide the Willowlands. Neither has the cofot of training so each is unsure in his/her new role and untrusting of the other. But the earthlines are broken and the Willowlands cry out for healing. There is something very primal about Robin McKinley's story. It touches a spiritual connection and a bond with the earth at the same time. Wings and roots.
