These people simply enchant me. I am talking about Philip C. Stead and Erin E. Stead. They are wonderful, lovely, sensitive, profoundly talented people and we are so, so lucky that they direct their talents, their energies, their insights into creating fabulous books for children.
Here is the latest in their beautiful picture book journey. Meet Bear. He is a kindly, friendly, vulnerable and very tired fellow and he has a story to tell. He's out gallumphing through the woods in search of a friend who will hear his story. He isn't forceful...he's gentle. He isn't insistent...he's hopeful.
As the story unfolds, Bear finds many friends but unfortunately his timing is poor. Each friend is being called by the rhythms of nature and needs to find seeds, fly south or has already tucked him/herself in for the long winter sleep.
My favorite part in the story is when Duck explains to Bear that he can't hear the story because he needs to fly south. On the next page, Bear raises his paw to check the wind direction. This is a bear who is attuned to the story of someone else. He has a story to share and he very much wants to share it before he falls asleep. Yet, he listens as he goes.
I want to hug this book and I send a huge bear hug to the Steads. Thank you for giving us and giving our children this beauty. Thank you for sending our children this sense of quiet. Thank you for mirroring for our children that deep sense of who they are, their story, and reassuring them that they too will be seen and heard.
