“A is for autumn and apples, of course.” Photographer Maass has turned his considerable talents to the subject of autumn and all of the hallmarks of that season. Each alphabet letter is related to something interesting and easy for youngsters to relate to, such as birds who migrate, frost, jackets, leaves, and more. The pictures are crisp and lovely, the text spare and to-the-point. The only letter that doesn’t correlate directly to autumn is x: “X is for train crossing, letting us know when trains are near.” But then, the letter X is always a problem-child for alphabet books! This beautiful title is a great starting point for discussions of the changing seasons in northern climes.
