When Daddy returns from war, he and his daughter, Lizzie, need some time to get to know each other again. On this cold November morning, Lizzie and Daddy are going hunting. She isn't sure she feels safe with a hunter. There is a shyness between them. Then, as they share the time together, they slowly get to know each other-the little things like cherry pie and the big things like being afraid. As always, the keen heart of Lois Lowry reflects perfectly the time and the sensitivity of the connection between parents and children. (The setting looks like post World War II but the ideas and the feelings would fit any time period.) 32 pages
