Down Under (Vanishing Culture Series)

Jan Reynolds went to an island off the coast of Australia to meet the Aborigines. She, two other women and a young girl, set off on a walkabout. When an aborigine is on Walkabout, "the trip becomes a Dream Journey" and the aborigines are connected to the moment in time of the Great Creation of the land, the water and the sky. They are a spiritual people who live off the land. As the four journeyed across the island, they searched for and found food inside logs and under bark. They ate bandicoot and snake and dug for shellfish in the sand. Using her vivid photographs, we make our way through forests and along the beaches. There is one set of pictures when they find a large carpet snake that is jaw-dropping. Later they built a fire and ate the snake but seeing the young girl casually dragging this long snake behind her through the woods is just amazing in this day and age. This is a great resource for teaching our children that not everyone lives in suburbia and worries about what kind of shoes they are wearing. It's a great visit with the highly resourceful, highly spiritual Tiwi people who may not have Nikes but they certainly understand what's truly important in this world. 32 pages Ages 5-11
