This is a historical fiction and time shifting novel that begins during World War II in China with CC leaving the family’s boat to enter the city of Feng Jie to buy food. After a fall, CC ends up in a hospital in a coma. Awakening from the coma, CC does not know who she is, but knows many things about the Song Dynasty. In time shifts between World War II China and 1091 China, where CC is the 13 year old daughter of a Chinese noble, the reader learns a great deal about the ruling class of the Song Dynasty. The story presents Mei Lan, her older brother, and orphaned servant /gardener/painter who are all facing the life that comes after childhood. This is the second book about CC (Chinese Cinderella). With 195 pages, a glossary and author’s note, this is bound to please the historical novel reader.
