A Greyhound of a Girl

Her mother looked pale. Her mouth was hanging open, a bit. “Tansey?” she said.  “Yeah,” said Mary. “Why?” “Who is she?’ “The new woman,” Mary said. … “Your great-grandmother,” said Scarlett. “Granny’s mother.  She was called Tansey.”

Twelve-year old Mary O’Hare’s best friend has moved away. Her beloved grandmother is in hospital and her mother tends to end every sentence with an exclamation point! Life has been better.

One day, on the way home from school, Mary meets a mysterious old-fashioned woman named Tansey.  Tansey claims to be a ghost, the ghost of Mary’s great-grandmother, as a matter of fact. Tansey wants May to deliver a message to her grandmother: “Tell her it’ll be grand.” And so Mary and her mother Scarlett begin a journey with Tansey and her daughter, Emer.  They travel out of Dublin to the countryside to the family farm, no longer sold.  And they learn that some bonds truly cannot be broken, neither by time, nor death.  A heart-warming family story this will appeal to girls who have strong connections to their mothers or grandmothers.
