Zane Dupree never knew his father who died on the job as a mailman. He never even knew he had any family until his great-grandmother, Miss Trissy of New Orleans, is found. Zane's mother sends him to New Orleans to visit in late August of 2005, right before Hurricane Katrina hits. Zane is just getting to know about his father, and uncle, when they are evacuated. When Zane's beloved dog Bandy escapes from the care during evacuation, Zane leaps out and follows Bandy all the way back to Miss Trissy's house, alone. The two of them survive the first part of the storm by escaping to the attic, and then are rescued by an old man, Tru and his ward, Malvina. The three of them, plus Bandy, try to find higher ground and escape the looters and security patrols left behind in flooded New Orleans. With each new problem, Zane and his new friends bravely soldier on, until they reach high dry ground and the welcoming arms of family.
