The cover alone may convince some young readers that this book might be worth opening. A very grumpy bear wearing a tutu of sorts is ungracefully performing a ballet move alongside a clearly more talented tutu clad goose. Knowing the bear is not comfortable can invite an uncomfortable reader into a very safe and highly entertaining space. Bring it on Bruce.
And Bruce does bring it on. He is at heart a very helpful friend and hence is willing to climb aboard his motorcycle (oh yes he rides a cycle) and head into town to buy ballet shoes for his goose friends so they will be able to perform - clearly a dream of theirs- in an upcoming performance of Swan Lake.
Delightful for reluctant readers is the fact that while Bruce is being a knight on his cycle, other animals are making his trip - particularly I would say a group of beavers - fraught with frustration. They are fantastic supporting characters born to entertain and offer relief to struggling, reluctant readers.
Bruce the knight on cycle will press on ... as the geese up the ante on the gear - the absolute musts - they need to perform.
The illustrations will send young readers howling with laughter. The frustration of the knight on the cycle will be satisfying and the story will be read before the young reader notices the last page has been turned.
