Weetzie Bat, age 23, is in love with the idea of Los Angeles in the time of Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Jayne Mansfield with its palm trees and roller skating waitresses.  She sews fringe onto her mini skirts to show solidarity with the Native Americans and sports some sequin bedecked 1950s taffeta dresses.

Her parents are divorced and don't relate with her at all.  No one does until she meets Dirk with his '55 Pontiac.  The two go out together and then Dirk confides in her that he is gay.   The two go "duck hunting" together.  Dirks grandma passes away leaving a magic lamp to Weetzie.  When she rubs it, a genie appears promising to grant her three wishes.

The struggle and angst of young people growing up and figuring out who they are and how they fit into our world are hinted at but left to float away under the cover of dreams come true.

Weetzie wishes for true love for her and for her good friend.

This is a cotton candy alternative reality to the greasy ladder most young people are grabbing for as they deal with Aids, sexuality, succeeding in their careers and raising the next generation.

Keenly expressed and sweet as a bouquet of cotton candy.
