I Want to Be in a Scary Story

Those of us who do story time at the library or read aloud in the classroom are always in search of books that will hold the attention of even the wiggliest listener.  Here ya go!

This book is a conversation between the main character, Little Monster, and the reader of the story.  Little Monster begins by announcing that he wants to be in a scary story.  He's looking for some real spine-chilling stuff.  Ears should be perking up around the story time room right now.  Yes, we're going for horror here.

But as we approach the dark and scary house set in the dark and scary forest, Little Monster gets a tad uneasy.  Maybe, just maybe, we should just make our story be about a spooky house, not a scary house.

Yep, that's better.  Well, until you go inside the house and the creepy witch jumps out.

As the story proceeds, Little Monster keeps adjusting his zone of comfort.  Children listening will cringe at the sound of the scary house and will laugh as Little Monster changes his mind, just a little bit, to make things a bit more tolerable.

Things seesaw back and forth until we get to the end when Little Monster has changed his mind completely and has decided to go with a funny story instead.  And he has something really, really fun and funny for his big finale.

Great read aloud.

Monster may think he wants to be in a scary story, but then again . . . A hilarious return by the team that brought us Hoot Owl, Master of Disguise.

Our author would like to write a funny story, but his main character — Monster — has a different idea. He wants to be the star of a chilling, petrifying, utterly terrifying SCARY story. But scary stories . . . well, they can be very scary — especially for their characters! Particularly when they involve dark forests and creepy witches and spooky houses . . . Oh yikes and crikes, this is definitely not the scary story Monster had in mind! Maybe he wants to be in a funny story after all!--from the publisher
