Wangari Maathai, environmentalist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, began life in Kenya surrounded by wonderful trees. Sadly, as she grew up she watched all the trees around her being cut down. The trees are gone and the birds are gone and now the land is barren. She decides to plant seedlings and then she convinces women of the village to plant trees, too. "Our lives will be better when we have trees again....We are planting the seeds of hope."
