Six-year-old Violet Mackerel must have her tonsils out and she positively believes she will have a remarkable recovery and have an improved voice that will allow her to become an opera singer on the radio. She also believes in the power of small packages with magic inside, so while in the waiting room when she meets Iris who is having arm surgery, Violet befriends her and gives her one of her purple throat lozenges, in the hopes it will make her feel less nervous about her operation. Violet is a delightful Pollyanna who may inspire her readers to see the brighter side of life.
