Cleo is the second girl in the family so she wears a lot of her older sister's hand me downs but when it comes to diving, she is definitely first. She and her friends love to dress up and play Dainty Ladies, although I regret to tell you that this includes pretending to hold cigarette holders and wearing the fur coats her mother's friends have left in the bedroom. One Saturday morning, Cleo's family makes a whole lot of really great pancakes and Cleo eats stack after stack. Then, it's time to go to her friend's birthday party. They all pile in the car to drive to the pool and unfortunately, the pancakes come back up all over Mrs. Kenly's fur coat. Oh my. How embarrassing. This is a nice series for independent readers. Cleo's voice sounds like the girl in the desk next to you and she recovers nicely from her ups and downs. I'm just surprised that in this day and age the author chose to have the girls pretending to smoke and wearing real fur coats. 60 pages
