Connor and Grace Tempest are now both aboard the Diablo, the pirate ship that Connor has been living and training on. When an attack with another ship goes wrong, one of Connor’s best friends is killed and Grace wants to get Connor to a safer place. They end up going to the elite Pirate Academy where Cheng Li is now teaching.
Grace is hoping that Connor will want to stay longer than the one week planned because she knows he can be trained to be a pirate in a safe setting. As Connor tries to make his decision on whether to stay at the Pirate Academy he is betrayed in a sword fight, which helps him make up his mind.
While at the Academy, Grace finds that a ring Lorcan gave her will allow her to visit the Vampirate ship that she lived on. As she watches Lorcan get weaker and weaker and is unable to heal his eyesight all she wants is to be able to go back and help him.
Then we have the threat of Sidorio (who was kicked off of the Vampirate ship in the first book) and his new crew, who are plaguing the seas the pirates travel. Connor realizes that no matter what he thinks, he knows that Grace’s need to go back to the Vampirate ship is deep and maybe she does belong there right now. And is going back to the Diablo really what is best for him?
