Papa is going to New York and he won't be back for Ida's birthday or for Christmas. It feels as though he'll be gone forever but he needs to move to New York and leave Jamaica so he can find work to give his family what it needs. Ida is heartbroken and then her father gives her two gifts that give her hope.
