The life of the Just-so-Woman is very orderly and tidy. While trying to fix the leg of a milking stool, she meets the Any-way Man. They don't quite see eye to eye. Life hands the Just-So Woman one problem after another. No soap left to clean the spoon, so she must make some. When she goes to put the milk in the churn, mice have made a nest inside. She must clean that out too. Next, she's out of salt and she'll have to borrow some from the Any-Way Man. Sometimes it is best to just take things the way they are.
The author wrote the book to give children a sense of what life was once like on a farm. Everything was done by hand and was done with great pride. Very different from our buy it, own it, toss it way of life.
