Tomorrow is the first day of eighth grade, so Ariel must cook and cook to relax. Her best friends have their outfits chosen, but her clothes can’t make her look taller or less “developed” – that little earthquake has left her feeling unsettled for weeks.
Of course, Nicki will be concentrating on photos for the yearbook, and M is trying to get things back to normal after her parents’ divorce and her mom’s agoraphobia (imagine being too scared of outside to even leave the house!). When Ariel is called to the office during opening assembly, tripping on her backpack in front of the whole school, she imagines the worst – has something happened to her dad? Was big brother Ryan in an accident? Oh, Mom…
Then school settles into a routine, Nicki’s “emergency” cellphone seems to ease out of her backpack a lot, and Ariel (yes, named after the mermaid for her bright red hair) keeps experimenting with recipes and entering cooking contests and asking M and Nicki to taste-test.
Suddenly, M’s mother takes a job several hours away, and M has to move in the middle of the school year. The three friends hatch up a plan to keep her in Alameda - it’ll all work out in the end, won’t it? Friendship and food (with recipes!!) make The Crepe Makers’ Bond a tasty read with some hidden surprises. 264 pages
