The Boys

Except for the days of the week, this is a wordless picture book. Our story begins on Tuesday with a shy little boy whose large red baseball cap successfully gives him something to hide behind as he heads out to the ballpark with his bat, ball and glove. There are the other kids out on the diamond having a great time playing a game of baseball. Head down, our hesitant little dude heads over to a bench in the park. It's already filled with a motley crew of old-timers. The little guy comes back on Wednesday. He has returned all his baseball gear to a box and exchanged it for an old man outfit. He's now ready to join the team on the bench. But, on Friday when the little guy shows up for more bench time, no one is there. They've all gone off to have a rollicking good time on the playground equipment. By Sunday, the old-timers have got themselves a pick up baseball game and guess who's invited to join? Man, can he hit that ball and it doesn't go unnoticed. The illustrations are spare but the personality of boy and men come through loud and clear. You're never too old to play ball!
