When I read this book description, I wasn't sure if this was an adult or a ya book, but after reading it, I feel it is appropriate for middle school on up.
Eleven-year-old Julia, the narrator, becomes very real to the reader. Julia wakes up to find that the Earth's rotation has slowed down. Days become longer and longer, as do the nights. However, this is not your typical dystopian novel, with lots of violence and outlandish events happening.
Things progress gradually, and I wondered as I read how I would react in this situation. Would I become a hoarder of food like Julia's mother? Or would I try to live my life to the fullest while daylight became several days long and nights seem never ending?
Although this is a dystopian novel, the more important aspect to this beautifully written book, is getting to know the characters. Julia has to cope with middle school, first crushes, more mature love, and friends suddenly changing and leaving you behind.
