Liza, Eddie, Melody, and Howie (the Bailey School kids) are to have their eyes examined at school. The Ophthalmologist is a very tall man with shoulders wide enough to fit two large potted plants on. When the kids first met him he was wearing green and red plaid pants, a red shirt, with a dark green tie and black and green roller skates. He also has on dark glasses and has a mouth full of crowded teeth. A metal eye was in the middle of his forehead. The man jokingly refers to the metal eye as his eyeball. Dr. Polly, the doctor, is very strong and keeps his office very dark, almost cavelike. Dr. Polly says it reminds him of his island home near Greece. He calls the students little lambs and he uses sheep on his eyechart. Dr. Polly tells Melody that he has hundreds of sheep at his home. Eddie says that Dr. Polly is crazy and he smells like an old goat. The kids see Dr. Polly eating goat cheese and drinking goat’s milk. Howie thinks the worst and takes his friends to his house to watch a video called Odysseus and Polyphemus. Howie tells them he thinks that Dr. Polly is like Polyphemus, a Cyclops! The other three kids think Howie is nuts. Howie is determined to prove that Dr. Polly is a Cyclops!
