In this hamster adventure, classroom pet Humphrey finds himself trying to help his classmates: “Raise Your Hand, Heidi” needs some new strategies for remembering to raise her hand during class instead of calling out, two friends must face a misunderstanding when one of them is picked last for a team, and the teacher must decide whether to retire or keep on teaching.
While he risks being discovered working on his plans to help his friends, Humphrey runs into a few startling surprises such as rolling into the bushes in a hamster ball and coming face to face with a cat. He imagines one of his worst fears (aliens!) while trying to figure out why there is a new janitor. Fans of Amelia Bedelia will be thrilled with Humphrey’s humorous, literal interpretations of classroom life. Children who love Beverly Cleary’s Ralph S. Mouse series will be enthralled with the indomitable and resourceful spirit of this little compassionate hero. This would make an enjoyable read-aloud in a grade 3 or 4 classroom.
