Stinky

2009 Geisel Honor Award

Stinky wakes up and gets ready to start his day. First a toothbrush with Crust toothpaste and then a good morning greeting to all the pals who live in his house with him. We're talking about the rats and the bats and the pickled onions. Off they go to greet the smelly day and ready to explore. But it's very important that they stay on their side of the muddy swamp because there is a town on the other side filled with kids who....dare I say it...they, well, they take baths. Worse yet, they eat "cake and apples." I don't know if we can face this.

Suddenly, there is a noise in the forest. A kid is walking along eating one of those apples and swinging his tool box. He's headed to a tree house that he's built on Stinky's side of the swamp. Disaster. How can they get rid of the kid? Ah, kids don't like gross stuff so maybe if they send in the gross guys, the kid will beat feet. And that is how Stinky's pet, Wartbelly, who is the grossest of the gross, got a new name...Daisy.

Turns out though the kid wishes he had a friend who could talk. Daisy isn't very forthcoming. Anybody want to bet money that Stinky and this kid might find themselves on the path to friendship? This is a wonderful early reader filled with a real story and wonderfully gross things. There's enough to entertain the most reluctant reader who prefers toads and mud and gross.
