Sometimes My Mommy Gets Angry

It's hard to be the son or daughter of a parent who is dealing with mental illness. Sometimes your mom is up and sometimes your mom is down and there is no rhyme or reason to it. This is a story about Annie whose mother suffers from bipolar disorder. This morning mommy is up and making pancakes and telling her daughter she looks "Beautastic!" Then Annie goes to school and sees her friends and draws pictures but when she heads back home she can't be sure which mommy is going to answer the door. This time it is her angry mommy. Annie has a copying strategy. She calls her grandmother and gets reassured that she is okay and that her mother still loves her. She gets her special secret snack. She thinks happy thoughts. The book is dedicated to all the children whose mommies struggle with mental illness. It's an important book for those who live the life and for those who need to understand what it's like to be in that family so they can best support these children. E.B. Lewis lent his sensitive, magical touch to the illustrations infusing some with light and some with darkness in his trademark style. 32 pages Ages 4-8
