Twelve-year-old Heidi has grown up with two mothers. There is her real mother, who is challenged and not fully capable of taking care of her own daughter, and there is Bernadette, who loves them both and mothers them both. Bernadette is challenged in her own way by her agoraphobia, and Heidi takes on the tasks that require connections outside the safe walls of their homes. Then, the day comes when Heidi finds some information that will take her on a journey away from all she knows to be true. A bus ride north will lead her to a bigger picture of who she is and where she comes from.
